Free Pattern to Make a Simple Felt Fairy

Are you looking for a DIY felt fairy that is easy to make? This tutorial shows you how to make a felt fairy softie. This magical fairy craft for kids is my contribution to Sew a Softie 2022. It’s the next of my kids’ crafts ideas that I love to do with my kids and their friends. You can use this free felt fairy pattern to sew with your kid and teach them hand sewing basics. While making the felt fairy doll, you will learn how to cut felt pieces and sew with a running stitch. This fairy is inspired by my daughter’s fairy drawing. She loves her new fairy friend!

I’m excited to be part of Sew a Softie hop again this year. The topic of this year is "Magic". My daughter thought that Fairy had been a magical creature and made a drawing as a template for our little felt fairy. The Sew a Softie initiative started back in 2015. It’s organized by Trixi, who wanted to encourage children worldwide to sew and learn how to sew. Sew a Softie tutorial hop lasts the whole of July, whereby creative bloggers share simple to sew softie tutorials. These fun tutorials help kids to learn how to sew. But, of course, anybody, not only kids, is welcome to sew these adorable easy-to-make softies.

General Instructions for DIY Felt Fairy
This magical fairy is easy to make. It can make for an excellent first sewing project. It’s stitched entirely by hand, using a running stitch. The eyes and mouth can be either hand drawn or stitched with backstitch. The felt fairy hair is attached with glue.

Step-by-step instructions follow to make the felt fairy. The finished soft toy is approximately 5.5” (15 cm) tall. The fairy softie is made from felt.
This free pattern includes the felt fairy free template, a material and supply list, complete instructions, and photos.
Two-strand embroidery floss is used to embroider the felt fairy. Knot thread ends on the wrong side of felt.
Tips for Sewing with Felt
TIP for holding pieces in place for sewing: Felt pieces can be pinned to the body shape to hold them in place until they are stitched.
Another option is to place a glue on the reverse side of felt shapes and position them on the body. Aleene's Tacky glue is a good glue for felt when working with kids.

Materials & Supplies for Felt Fairy Softie
Materials and Supplies needed:
Fairy Softie free template - to download the file, subscribe to the FunClothCrafts newsletter. In the newsletter, you find a password to the subscriber's Free Downloads Vault
felt color sheets (you’ll need four felt sheets) based on your choice (fairy body, fairy dress, hair, wings) (find great felt at Benzie Design or find more buying options in the Types of Felt section of How to Sew Felt blog post)
embroidery floss: matching colors to the darker tone of felt, black, white
fiber fill to fill the softie
small or embroidery scissors (KAI 5 1/2 inch Embroidery Scissors are the ones I use)
pencil or an air erasable pen to copy the template to felt
fabric permanent marker (optional - for mouth and eyelashes)
pins (optional - these are my favorites)
a glue that works on felt (Aleene’s All Purpose Tacky Glue works well)
How to Make a DIY Felt Fairy
Cut out felt shapes
Use the free template shared in Materials & Supplies (section above) to cut out all fairies’ felt shapes from felt. You can use a pencil or an air erasable pen to trace the pattern. Please contact me if you would like an SVG file for the cutting machine.
2. Sew wings
Position the wings just below the top of fairies’ dress. Sew wings with running stitch to the dress. I have used two-strand embroidery floss.
3. Sew body
Take two body pieces and sew them together with a running stitch.
Note that if you prefer to hand sew the eyes and mouth, you must do it before this step. I recommend using backstitch for the mouth and eyes shapes.
If your felt is stiff enough and you draw the eyes and mouth, you can leave one body piece only.
4. Sew dress leaving opening below
Assemble the felt felt holding the parts with pins. You can pin the wings together, so the sewing is easier. Start sewing with the running stitch close to the edges, leaving an opening below.
5. Attach hair
Attach hair with glue. Before playing with your fairy, you might need to wait for the glue to dry.
6. Draw eyes and mouth
Following the free pattern, draw eyes and mouth with a permanent fabric marker.
7. Fill with Fiber Fill
Fill the fairy with fiber fill. You can help yourself with a pencil. Fill as much fiber fill as you like. If you don’t have Fiber Fill you can use small pieces of felt. (I forgot to take picture when I was making this step)
8. Close the opening
Close the opening that remained on the dress with a running stitch.
